Every year over half a million sandhill cranes congregate along an 80 mile stretch of the central Platte River in Nebraska, in one of the earth's greatest migrations. They "fuel up" on the grain fields near the river during the day and then return to the sandbars in the river to roost overnight. After several weeks they begin their trip as far north as Siberia for the their summer nesting.
